The power of imagination and the thirst for knowledge outside one's boundaries are the two weapons Miyauchi Renge carries on a daily basis.
The world can very vast in the eyes of the first year grade student, yet Renge knows the topography of her land like the back of her hand. Of course, she knows where to find the ripest of berries; she accidentally ate them raw as a child. Of course, she knows how to get out from a thick forest at night and to the nearest road; the forest is part of her backyard. Of course, she knows why fireflies light up at night; they are carrying stars in their backs.
Yet, there are so many questions that even the mighty Renge does not know the answer to. How big is an airplane, and can it really take her anywhere in the world that she wants? Is the fashion sense of city folk truly that different from what she wears on a daily basis? Does everyone in the city own a cell phone, and is it considered "the thing?" These are all questions Renge wants answered.
In the back of her mind, Renge is always afraid that she will stick out like a sore thumb if she were to leave the land she calls home. What if people see her as some stereotypical country bumpkin? Renge does not want to believe that she is at all different from the people in the city, but when the proof is right in front of her more times than she can count, Renge is wary about leaving her comfort zone.
In order for her to find the answers to her doubts, she must have the courage to take a step outside the country and expand her knowledge with her own eyes. And so, she gives the town that she loves her first farewell…
