Azuki Azusa does not have many friends, if any. She may be a kind girl, but she is too shy to truly speak out to others. When the one opportunity for her to make some friends turns out to be a prank by some of her classmates, she begins to deny the concept of friendship. And so, she decides to change…

When the opportunity arrives for her to change her environment, Azusa crafts a new persona. She conceals her meek nature to put up a princess-like façade. Azusa poses as someone of high status and good looks, and her popularity soars. But putting on a mask turns out to be no less stressful than figuring out how to speak out to others. Having to work multiple part-time jobs to afford the expenses involved with her deception and read all the latest fashion magazines to maintain her good looks, Azusa learns that popularity might be more tiring than she imagined. To further add to her worries, Azusa’s façade does little to acquire her the friends she wanted. And so, she decides to change…

A simple encounter with a perverted boy makes her question her own actions. Is it right to continue this game of charades? But what if she takes a risk and the same thing that happened in her old school happens in her new environment? Azusa cannot afford to lose her current status, even if she knows that the people gathering around her are simply admirers, none of them close to a friend. But deep down in her heart, she knows things cannot go on unchanged for much longer and that something has to give. Does she have it in her to depend on somebody to help her out? Once more, she decides to change…

Azusa struggles to figure out who she is and what kind of person she wants to become. Three times, she forged herself anew. Each time, the result failed to meet her expectations. Yet the experience allowed her to grasp the meaning of friendship. What she believed was out of her reach was actually right under her nose. Why would she need the admiration of crowds if she has a couple friends willing to stay by her side through thick and thin?

And so, Azusa chooses to be herself.
